SAN MARCOS, Texas – The Bobcats (26-7) defeated the Mountaineers (15-13) 1-0 and completed a three game sweep of App State to improve to 5-1 in Sun Belt Conference play.
After two scoreless innings the Bobcats finally broke through and put a run on the board in the third inning. In the top of the third inning Hannah Earls made a catch on a ball that hit off of the glove of Sara Vanderford and then threw the ball into to second base to complete an inning ending double play.
Megan Kelnar flied out to start the inning and then Earls hit a single to left field to give the Bobcats their first base runner of the inning. Ciara Trahan then hit a double that drove in Earls, who scored all the way from first base. Trahan would be caught attempting to steal second base for the second out of the inning. Vanderford hit a double next but was thrown out at their base attempting to get an extra base to end the inning.
There wasn’t much action in the fourth and fifth innings but the Mountaineers threatened in the top of the sixth inning.
Kayt Houston grounded out to start the inning and then Grace Barrett singled up the middle to give the Mountaineers their first base runner of the inning. Peyton Darnell doubled to left field and this moved Barrett to third base. The Mountaineers were unable to capitalize on this as the next two batters fouled out and grounded out. The Bobcats would go down in order in the bottom of the sixth inning as we headed to the final frame with the Bobcats still up 1-0.
The Mountaineers were able to get a base runner in the bottom of the seventh inning but left her stranded and the Bobcats picked up the win by the score of 1-0.
