SAN MARCOS, Texas – The Bobcats (23-7) defeated the Aggies (25-4) 4-3 in a thrilling game that felt like a regional NCAA tournament game at Bobcats Softball Stadium.
After a scoreless first inning that saw both the Bobcats and Aggies leave one runner stranded, the Aggies would get on the board in the top of the second inning. Rylen Wiggins picked up a two-out single which was followed by a Kramer Eschete walk. Powell would then hit a single to drive in Wiggins and give the Aggies their first lead of the game.
Both teams had a scoreless third inning a three up, three down inning for the Aggies, the Bobcats would get on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth inning. Karmyn Bass would get a lead-off double to center field to get things going for the Bobcats. JJ Smith would then reach on a throwing error that also allowed Bass to score to tie the game at one run each. The next three batters would get out and we were tied after four innings.
The fifth inning was another scoreless one as both teams went down in order. The Aggies were able to regain the lead in the top of the sixth inning. Jazmine Hill was hit by a pitch to start the inning and then Trinity Cannon was walked. Julia Cottrill would hit a single to move Hill to third and Cannon to second and load the bases up. Allie Enright then hit a single to right field that hit the wall and allowed Hill and Cannon to score.
The Bobcats would answer in the bottom of the sixth inning. Sara Vanderford would get a leadoff double to get the Bobcats going. Karmyn Bass was walked next and then JJ Smith reached on a fielder’s choice as Bass was called out at second base and Vanderford advanced to third. Katarina Zarate hit a sac-fly next that drove in Vanderford and moved Smith to second base. Emilee Baker flied out to end the inning and the Bobcats cut the lead to one run.
The Aggies went down in order in the top of the seventh inning and the Bobcats were down to their final three outs. Megan Kelnar singled to get the Bobcats the tying run on base to start the inning. Hannah Earls then laid down a sac-bunt to move Kelnar to second base. Ciara Trahan and Piper Randolph were then walked, and this gave the Bobcats the winning run at second base with the bases loaded with only one out. Vanderford was also walked to bring in Kelnar and tied the game at three runs each. Karmyn Bass reached first base on a throwing error after Trahan was called out at home and the error allowed Randolph to come home to give the Bobcats a 4-3 win in a classic between the two teams.
Game Notes:
•Jessica Mullins improved to 14-3 on the season and finished with 7 strikeouts and 3 earned runs in 7 innings pitched. She surpassed 700 career strikeouts in the game and now sits at a total of 702 for her career.
•Sara Vanderford had 1 hit (double) and 1 RBI, Hannah Earls, Karmyn Bass, Emilee Baker and Megan Kelnar each had 1 hit, and Katarina Zarate had the only other RBI for the game.
•Vanderford recorded 1 RBI to give her 162 on her career and is now only behind Ariel Ortiz (164) by two for all-time career leader for the Bobcats.
•Hannah Earls added 2 stolen bases and now has 74 career stolen bases, which is currently third all-time, and trails Haley Gaddis (79) and Kristen Zaleski (128) on the all-time career list.
•The Bobcats improved to 21-0 when scoring 3 or more runs.
•The official attendance was 1,111, the fifth largest crowd at Bobcats Softball Stadium
