SAN MARCOS, Texas – The Bobcats and Nittany Lions each scored a run in the first inning and then the game turned into a defensive battle that went one extra inning.

Things got started early for both teams as they both managed to score a run to kick things off. Maddie Gordon gave the Nittany Lions their first baserunner after getting a single and then stole second base shortly after. After Haylie Brunson got hit by a pitch, Gaby Garcia singled up the middle to bring in Gordon and gave the Nittany Lions the first lead of the game.

Hannah Earls got things going for the Bobcats by getting a leadoff single and then Ciara Trahan would advance her to third on a sacrifice bunt. After a Sara Vanderford walk, Anna Jones would bring Earls home on a groundout. The game was tied at one run after one inning.

The game turned into a defensive battle after pitchers on both sides were able to force six straight scoreless innings in the second through seventh innings.

The Nittany Lions couldn’t get anything going in the top of the eighth inning. The Bobcats on the other hand were able to capitalize off of a couple of errors committed by the Nittany Lions. Katarina Zarate was placed on second base to start the inning and Emilee Baker reached on a fielding error. Earls reached on a fielder’s choice at the next at bat and a throwing error allowed Zarate to reach third base safely, while Earls moved to second base. Trahan hit a sac-fly at the next at bat and that brought in Zarate for the game winning run.

The Bobcats took the series over Penn State after winning yesterday’s game and game one today. They will play again tonight at 6:45 in game two of their doubleheader.
